A heat pump is an air conditioner that has the ability to cycle the refrigerant backwards through the coils to produce heat instead of cool air. It accomplishes this with a reversing valve. They are good for areas that use some heat but have mild winters. They will have a difficult time maintaining a temperature in a building that is more than 30 degrees greater than the outside temperature.
Tampa is primarly a heat pump market. We see cold weather in the 40's or 50's on occasion in the winter but rarely in the 30's or near freezing. We tend to require more than electric resistance heat but not as much as a gas furnace. They are also more efficient than strip heat and do not require a gas connection like a furnace would.
As we travel a little further south, the heating function is used even less and heat pumps become less common and economical. A resident in Tampa would realize the investment of installing a heat pump through reduced energy bills within a couple years.
