In order to meet energy efficiency standards, building contruction today is very "tight" i.e. air does not escape easily nor is it introduced to the building in the amounts required. This traps harmful chemicals and adversely affects the indoor air quality. In humid areas like Hillsborough and Pinellas county we are more likely to use energy recovery ventilators or ERV's while cooler climate's would use a heat recovery ventilator or HRV. It is important to note that these devices do not save energy. They use energy every time they turn on. HRV's and ERV's are, however, the most efficient way to ventilate a building. What they do is expel stale air from the house while introducing fresh air at the same time. The benefits to using ERV's are:
improved indoor air quality
control humidity - this will only work when the humidity level outside is higher than the indoor relative humidity
