A labor warranty would cover any labor costs that are not covered from a part warranty as a result of repair work. Labor warranties are typically purchased from the manufacturer at the time of a new system installation and then resold to the homeowner. We say typically because some contractors underwrite their own labor warranties. Most factories offer a 30 day labor warranty as standard and many contractors up that to 365 days. It is considered insurance fraud to offer a labor warranty beyond 365 days without the appropriate licensing and purchased warranty from the factory. This is to protect a consumer in case the contractor goes out of business. In the event of a repair, the manufacturer would pay the contractor's labor rate. While a homeowner would have peace of mind and not be exposed to repair costs, labor warranties would not cover routine maintenance.
You can perform a licensee search to determine if you contractor has the appropriate licensing to offer and perform service work.
